Suicide

I was on lunch break at work, taking an escalator down to the ground level, when I noticed an enormous line for the pay phones. There's never anybody at the pay phones because everybody's got a cellphone, but on this occasion, there was the largest crowd I could imagine. I even noticed one of my coworkers at the front of the line. Except he wasn't using the phone... nobody was. Everyone crowded around the phones were just looking at something.

At the bottom of the escalator I saw that it wasn't only people at the pay phones. The ground level is open to the first basement floor, and people were crowded around the railing all watching something. But I couldn't see anything to watch.

I called out to my coworker and asked him what was up. He pointed to what at first appeared to be a random woman in the crowd. Except she wasn't on the safe side of the railing. You can see her just to the left of his ear.

Upon further inspection, there were a few cops trying to talk her down, and just about everyone else egging her on with attention. I was hungry and didn't have time for this girl to talk herself out of it. She was only one floor up. Had she really wanted to hurt herself, she could have easily taken a few escalators up and gotten some height. It was an obvious cry for help. On my way to lunch, I managed to snap a shot of the firemen rushing to position a mattress below her.

On my way back to work, there was nothing. I'm sure she came to her senses.
